Laser Hair Removal

eliminant unwanted hair—permanently

ditch the razor. start thinking laser.

Laser hair removal is a permanent reduction of hair using laser energy. Based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, light energy with a specific wavelength is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, resulting in the rapid heating and damaging of the cells that recreate hair. Its powerful, concentrated light targets only the hair follicle (and not the surrounding areas) attacking the root of the hair directly, during its growth phase. Damaged follicles produce lighter, thinner hair or no hair at all. Up to 20% of hair is in the active growth stage that is targeted at each treatment. The process treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously, making the treatment much faster than traditional laser hair removal alternatives.

Who is a candidate for laser hair removal?

Men and women of all skin types, although deeper skin tones are treated with caution and some may require more treatments. Before treatment, avoid sun exposure or tanning for two weeks before and two weeks after any laser hair removal treatment. Some medications and medical conditions can interfere with treatments — your technician, along with Dr. Jezdic will review your history and assess your suitability. Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy. These treatments cannot be done on anyone who has taken Accutane within the past 6 months. White and grey hair is not responsive to this treatment. Fake tan can be worn in between sessions but on the day of your treatment, your skin needs to be clear.

What areas can be treated?

Most areas of the body can be treated with laser hair removal. Exceptions include around the eyebrows, inside the nose and ears. The most common areas include underarms, groin, legs (half or full), arms, and upper lip. The length of the treatment time is dependent on the area being treated, smaller areas may take as little as 20 minutes, while larger areas may take an hour or more. One or more areas can be treated during the same session.

How many treatments do I need?

The average number of treatments is 8, although people with darker skin or lighter, finer hair or hormonal imbalances may require more treatments. It is normal to require occasional touch-up treatments as maintenance. Sessions should be scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area. It should be noted that shaving is permitted between sessions and the skin must be shaved before each appointment.

What can I expect during the treatment?

There is a sensation that is similar to an elastic band snapping against the skin. The area being treated will be covered with cold gel which helps reduce the sensation. Topical numbing creams are also available for added comfort. Skin must be shaved in the area being treated prior to treatment.

What can I expect after the treatment?

These sessions are designed to provide no downtime. The energy emitted by hair removal lasers may cause temporary redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are, in fact, positive clinical results and indicates that the follicle has responded to treatment. Some irritation – similar to a mild sunburn – can be experienced afterward. Most people return to normal activity right away.
